The Truth About Gum Disease: Debunking 3 Common Myths

With the world at your fingertips on your phone or computer, you may be able to learn about almost anything you want. One subject many people dive into is their smiles. There are oral health issues that can cause problems, especially gum disease. As you research this condition, you may run into myths that surround it. To help you know the facts, here’s the truth behind three misconceptions.

Myth #1: Gum Disease Is Rare

The reality behind this thought may actually surprise you! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in the U.S., nearly half of adults over 30 have some form of gum disease. Not only that, but that number jumps up to 60% for those 65 and older. Since it may be more prevalent than you initially thought, it’s important you keep up with brushing and flossing to prevent this condition at home.

Myth #2: Gum Disease Will Inevitably Cause Tooth Loss

As was briefly hinted above, gum disease has different stages. The earliest form of it is called gingivitis, and it often causes a noticeable red color, swelling, and bleeding when you brush or floss. When your dentist can catch it at this point, the damage done is reversible, meaning you’ll likely avoid tooth loss.

When this condition is left untreated, it can progress into periodontitis. At this stage, you’ll have the same symptoms above, along with painful chewing, gum recession, and tooth loss in more severe cases. While you are at risk of missing teeth, you should do your best to prevent it from happening. By heading to your provider, they will be able to help you preserve your oral health and avoid serious complications.

Myth #3: Gum Disease Treatment Is a Painful Procedure

Building off the previous myth, many people are worried about the expected pain when it comes to deep cleanings. These treatments help remove bacteria buildup that’s causing problems, but local sedation is commonly used during them to reduce discomfort to a minimum or none at all.

Not only that, but you may also choose to get dental sedation. This is an effective way to ease your anxiety and help you relax. You’ll be conscious when you get it, but you may doze off on your own with how calm you feel!

In the end, there are many misconceptions that surround gum disease. You should only believe the facts and talk to your dentist about any worries you have. That way, you feel confident avoiding or managing this condition.
