So what was the deal with those fluoride treatments? Do they actually work, or is their effectiveness greatly exaggerated?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to many, many <\/em>studies, yes \u2013 professional fluoride does reduce the risk of cavities quite dramatically. Just not in the way you might have imagined as a child. Here are the facts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What IS Fluoride?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The science of fluoride probably isn\u2019t going to make much sense if you don\u2019t know what it actually is. In short, fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral commonly found in soil and water. It also has quite the interesting reaction when it\u2019s exposed to dental enamel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see, cavities form because oral bacteria produce acids that gradually wear down teeth. As part of this process, the essential minerals that form the tooth\u2019s structure are broken down. Fluoride doesn\u2019t \u201cregrow\u201d these minerals, but it can replace them. As it bonds with the remaining tooth structure, it hardens, effectively repairing the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OTC vs. Professional Fluoride Applications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now, \u201cself-applying\u201d fluoride by brushing your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash does certainly reduce your risk of cavities. Researchers estimate that those who use these over-the-counter products are nearly 30% less likely to develop cavities. Adding a professional treatment on top of that, however, almost doubles that statistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, fluoride varnishes (which are highly concentrated and \u201cpainted\u201d over teeth) seem to be particularly effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional fluoride treatments are proven to work. That said, they\u2019re not necessary for everyone. Fluoride treatments work best for children who are still learning how to take care of their teeth \u2013 as well as adults with medical or genetic conditions that make it more difficult to have a bacteria-free oral biome.
